Texas-born, Carolina-based abstract painter Robert Langford brings his longtime interest in art, music and architecture to a Nov. 2 solo exhibition at SOZO Gallery in Uptown Charlotte.
“Syncopation: Shifting Focus,” features a series of all-new paintings in which Langford explores the ways we curate our own sensory experiences within the larger context of a shared urban environment. Vibrant color combinations slip into intricate, layered structures that both create order and challenge it. The show’s title refers to the effect of shifting the emphasis on a beat within a musical composition. It’s a brief, but welcome disruption; a fresh take on the status quo.
“There’s an energy or flow in a building’s design, and there’s repetition in the rhythm of a piece of music,” says Langford. “We expect these qualities and look for them. Yet, what often draws us in are those moments of surprise, when our attention is redirected in some new aesthetic way. This is what I hope to do with my paintings, in terms of color, pattern and where I draw the viewer’s eye."
